zdigital What we said: Having temporarily downsized from stadiums to Dave Grohl’s garage to record album number seven, you might be fooled into thinking the Foo Fighters had pared-back their sound accordingly. Fear not: from the moment the supercharged riffage of ‘Bridge Burning’ noisily heralds their return, it’s clear that Wasting Light delivers that satisfying heaviness the Foos have been promising for years. Clearly informed by what’s gone before, the emotive, string-led ‘I Should Have Known’ goes some way to counter-balance incendiary, multi-layered guitar onslaughts like ‘Rope’, but even that boasts a newly impassioned delivery. All we can say is Grohl must have exceedingly patient neighbours, because this is one emphatically cacophonous return to form.
