zdigital What we said: Born in Senegal and raised in Kuwait by Russian parents, Fatima Al Qadiri has experienced a fair few cultures. However, the Brooklyn artist chose to venture into unknown territory for her full-length debut, exploring the concept of an “imagined China” to highlight Western stereotypes of Chinese culture. The heavily digitised sounds here will please fans of Oneohtrix Point Never’s R Plus Seven, while the sparse arrangements and neon synth motifs betray the influence of grime. Hyperdub label owner Kode9 once coined the term “sino-grime” in reference to the “Chinese”-influenced grime records of the early 2000s; it perhaps serves as a fitting classification for Asiatisch.
