zdigital What we said: The Weeknd and Frank Ocean have a lot to answer for. By making confessional R&B cool, they’ve liberated potentially hundreds of navel-gazing singer-songwriters from a bleak future playing poorly-attended open mic nights, simply by empowering them to swap acoustic guitars for silky vocals and stuttering beats. One such artist is James “Barbarossa” Mathé, who’s defected to analogue synths for his latest album and found the confidence to embrace his inner D’Angelo. It suits him well. From the mournful church organs and minimal percussion of ‘Bloodline’ to the beatific bounce of ‘Pagliaccio’, it’s a superb second studio effort.
