As the NYC-born and bred songwriter recently explained to FACT Magazine, in the wake of the Syrian refugee crisis and the Black Lives Matter movement she’s been emboldened, and finally feels “ready to be the Nina I was born to be, the Bob I was born to be, the Lennon I was born to be.” Listening to songs like ‘Holy War’ – which entreats listeners to look beyond race and sexuality, and features beautifully minimal hip hop production – you can’t help but wish Keys had leant her silken tones to more political subject matter sooner. By engaging with the subjects that matter deepest to her, she’s made her most personal and affecting album yet.
